Should I drink water before my hysterectomy?

You can’t drink water 4 hours before surgery before hysterectomy.
Hysterectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia. When sedated under general anesthesia, the protective choking and swallowing reflexes will be weakened or disappeared, and there is a risk of reflux and aspiration, which may cause aspiration pneumonia and suffocation in severe cases. Therefore, for elective surgery patients are required to fast for water, which can make the stomach fully empty and prevent the above risks from occurring during anesthesia.
Generally elective surgery patients should not eat fatty and meaty foods 8 hours before surgery, easy-to-digest proteins, starches and dairy products such as milk 6 hours before surgery, and water or non-dregs drinks 4 hours before surgery. Special cases such as pregnant women and emergency surgery should be adjusted on a case-by-case basis.
The time of preoperative water fasting should be under the guidance of professional physicians, do not drink water before surgery without authorization, so as to avoid adverse consequences.
