Can prostate enlargement cause constipation?

Generally, prostate enlargement does not cause constipation. Prostatic hyperplasia is a common benign disease due to hyperplasia of the migratory zone around the urethra of the prostate gland, with aging and functioning testes being the main etiologic factors. Its main clinical manifestations are frequent urination, difficulty in urination, and urinary retention. It usually does not affect the function of defecation and does not cause the symptom of constipation. Prostatic hyperplasia is treated by medication and surgery. Medications include alpha receptor blockers (e.g. terazosin, etc.), 5 alpha reductase inhibitors (e.g. finasteride, etc.), and so on. Surgery includes transurethral resection of the prostate, open surgery, catheterization or cystostomy. It should be noted that if the prostate enlargement is large in size, there may be pressure on the rectum, and there is a certain possibility that it may cause constipation. Therefore, for people suffering from prostate enlargement, it is recommended to seek early medical treatment.
