Poliomyelitis is an acute gastrointestinal infectious disease caused by a virus (poliovirus), commonly known as “polio”.
Poliovirus is a small ribonucleic acid virus, enterovirus, highly infectious, mainly through the fecal-oral route of transmission, humans are the only natural host of poliovirus. The virus can attack the nervous system, and most patients do not have any symptoms after infection, but some patients may be paralyzed or even die of respiratory paralysis.
Since there is no effective treatment for polio, vaccination is the key to preventing polio. Currently, safe and effective vaccines include live attenuated polio vaccine administered orally and inactivated polio vaccine administered by injection.
