Is 100 alpha-fetoprotein high?

The patient’s alpha-fetoprotein 100μg/L is significantly elevated. The normal reference value of serum alpha-fetoprotein level <25μg/L, the patient’s alpha-fetoprotein 100μg/L is significantly higher than normal. Alpha-fetoprotein is a kind of protein synthesized by the liver and yolk sac in the early fetal period, and the synthesis will be inhibited after birth, and it will be synthesized again only when the embryonic tissues of the gonads or hepatocytes are abnormal or malignant, and the synthesis rate will be increased. Pathological elevation of alpha-fetoprotein is seen in primary liver cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc., but chronic active liver disease, reproductive system tumors such as malignant teratoma can also have elevated alpha-fetoprotein. Pregnant women and newborns may have transient elevation of alpha-fetoprotein, but it is mostly normal and can be reviewed regularly. Alpha-fetoprotein is generally used to diagnose liver cancer, but it is not the only basis for confirming the diagnosis. Patients with 100μg/L alpha-fetoprotein and suspected liver cancer need to go for ultrasound, enhanced CT, enhanced MRI, or even pathology examination to make a clear diagnosis and undergo treatment according to the doctor’s instruction.
