Intermediate geographic anemia usually develops in early childhood, around 1 to 3 years of age. It is one of the types of beta-protein disorders anemia.
Beta-protein depletion anemia can be classified as resting, mild, intermediate, and severe. It occurs in early childhood around 1~3 years of age.
1. In patients with the resting type, there are usually no clinical symptoms or a decrease in the mean red blood cell index on physical examination.
2. Light-type patients may have no obvious clinical symptoms or only mild anemia and jaundice.
3. The intermediate type usually presents in early childhood, and may be accompanied by moderate anemia, splenomegaly, and other manifestations, and a few may have mild skeletal changes and delayed sexual development.
4. Heavy type, also known as cooley anemia, is characterized by significant anemia and is dependent on blood transfusion for survival. If the patient does not correct the severe anemia through blood transfusion in a timely manner, the patient’s life can be endangered due to severe anemia before the age of 5.
Therefore, when the patient has thalassemia, it is necessary to pay attention to the hospital in time, after clarifying the specific type, under the guidance of the doctor to carry out reasonable treatment.
