Rheumatoid arthritis belongs to the category of paralytic disease in traditional Chinese medicine, and the traditional Chinese medicines used for treating paralytic disease include Gui Zhi, Fenghuang, and Duhu. 1. Gui Zhi: It has the effects of sweating and relieving muscles (relieving evil qi on the surface of the skin), warming the meridians and so on. It is used for wind-cold flu, epigastric cold pain (cold pain felt in the stomach and abdomen), joint paralysis, phlegm (pathological product formed by impaired metabolism of water and fluid), and edema. Pregnant women and menorrhagia should not use Gui Zhi. 2. Fangfeng: It has the efficacy of dispelling wind and relieving epidemics, winning dampness and relieving pain (removing pain caused by excessive dampness), and relieving spasm. It is used for colds and headaches, rubella and itching, tetanus. Yin and blood deficiency, fever and wind should not be used. 3. Duhuo: mainly used for the treatment of pain in the waist and knees, skin itching. It should not be used by people with deficiency of yin and blood. 4. Wei Ling Xian: it has the effect of dispelling wind-dampness and opening the meridians. It is mainly used for the treatment of numbness of limbs, contracture of tendons and veins (continuous tension and stiffness of muscles), and unfavorable flexion and extension. It should not be taken by those who are weak in qi and blood.
