Treatment of parasitic diseases usually involves identifying the type of parasite you are infected with and then choosing the right medication to target it. Pinworms and whipworms are the 2 most common threadworm infections worldwide. 1. Most pinworm infections are asymptomatic. The most common symptom of pinworm disease is perianal itching, also known as pruritus ani. Treatment regimens for pinworms include: albendazole (adults and children: 400 mg at once on an empty stomach, repeated 2 weeks later), mebendazole (adults and children: 100 mg at once, repeated 2 weeks later), and bis(hydroxynaphthyl) thiamphenicol (adults and children: 11 mg/kg, with a maximum dose of 1 g; repeated 2 weeks later). 2. Most hairy head flagellate nematode infections are asymptomatic. Moderate to severe infections more often present with clinical symptoms. Thin stools may be present, and stools often contain mucus and/or blood. Nocturnal bowel movements are common. We treat whipworm patients with or without symptoms with mebendazole (adults and children: 100 mg orally twice a day for 3 days). Albendazole may also be used (adults and children: 400 mg orally once a day for 3 days). Treatment of parasites should be carried out under the supervision of a physician.
