Blastocyst crumpling is a procedure performed prior to freezing a blastocyst to shrink the blastocyst after the fluid in the blastocyst has drained out. Prior to freezing the blastocyst, a tool such as a hypodermic needle or laser perforator is used to puncture the swollen blastocyst vesicle from the area with the lowest number of trophoblast cells, and the fluid in the blastocyst cavity is aspirated through the needle, resulting in the rapid shrinkage of the blastocyst, a process called blastocyst crumpling. The purpose of blastocyst crumpling is to minimize damage to the blastocyst due to freezing, increase the survival rate of thawed blastocysts, and to assist in increasing the likelihood of blastocyst implantation and pregnancy success. If the patient has a need for embryo freezing, it is recommended to visit the hospital as soon as possible to have an individualized treatment plan developed by the doctor.
