There are many Chinese herbs that tonify blood and qi, including codonopsis, jujube and longan meat. Codonopsis has the effect of strengthening the spleen and lungs, nourishing blood and generating fluids; jujube has the effect of tonifying the center and benefiting the qi (treating qi deficiency by tonifying the spleen), nourishing blood and tranquilizing the mind; longan meat has the effect of tonifying the heart and spleen, nourishing blood and tranquilizing the mind.
1. Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae: It can be used for treating deficiency of spleen and lung qi, poor appetite and tiredness, cough and asthma, deficiency of qi and blood, yellowish color, palpitation and shortness of breath, thirst, internal heat and thirst (internal heat accompanied with symptoms such as overeating and excessive drinking and urination) etc. It is not suitable to be used together with Fructus Vulgaris. It is not suitable to be used with veratrum.
2. Jujube: It can be used to treat spleen deficiency with little food, loose stools (thin and unformed feces), and women’s dirty agitation (upset and depression, sadness and wanting to cry for no reason), etc. It can also be used to treat the symptoms of dampness, phlegm and stagnation. Where there is dampness and phlegm, stagnation, tooth disease, worm disease, are not appropriate.
3. Longan meat: can be used to treat deficiency of qi and blood, palpitations and anxiety (heartbeat, panic), forgetfulness and insomnia, blood deficiency and yellowing. Those who have phlegm fire and dampness stagnation and stop drinking (water stays in the body) should not take it.
