It is not possible to generalize what formulae are effective in reducing swelling, but rather to choose the right formula based on the identification of the symptoms. Clinical Chinese herbal remedies that can reduce swelling include Realizing Spleen Dispensary, Shuo Chiseling Drink, and Wu Pi Drink. 1. Solid Spleen Dispersion: Its effects include warming yang, strengthening the spleen, promoting qi and inducing diuresis. It is used for treating yin and water retention due to deficiency of yang in the spleen and kidney. Symptoms include swelling of the body, especially below the waist, lack of warmth in the hands and feet, lack of thirst in the mouth, fullness in the chest and abdomen, and loose stools. The constituent drugs include Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria, Mucuna pruriens, Houpu and Muxiang. 2. Composition of drugs including Poria bark, pepper eye, red beans, gentiana, qiangwu, zejiao, etc.. 3. Wu Pi Drink: Its effects include inducing diuresis, eliminating swelling, regulating Qi and strengthening the spleen. It is mainly used for treating water-stagnation and qi stagnation of Pi Shui (edema with swelling of the whole body, scanty urination and abdominal distension as the main manifestations). Symptoms include swelling of the whole body, heaviness of limbs, distension of the heart and abdomen, shortness of breath, dysuria, and edema in pregnancy. The drug includes Sang Bai Pi, Chen Pi, Da Bu Pi, Poria Poria, Ginger Pi.
