Can low sodium cause edema?

Low sodium generally refers to hyponatremia, which causes edema.
1. Hyponatremia is a common clinical disorder of electrolyte disorders, which responds to a decrease in the concentration of serum sodium in the blood. The general symptoms of hyponatremia include dizziness, fatigue, numbness of hands and feet, etc. In moderate to severe cases, there are nausea, headache, blurred vision, blurred consciousness, drowsiness, seizures, limb edema, cerebral edema and even coma.
2. Hyponatremia causes edema mainly because of the imbalance of water-salt balance, water infiltration from the blood vessels to the tissue interstitial space, and the emergence of subcutaneous edema of the extremities. When body fluid increases significantly and plasma osmolality decreases, fluid can also enter brain cells to trigger cerebral edema.
It should be noted that, if the long-term use of sodium diuretic or long-term low-sodium diet, the occurrence of unexplained nausea, vomiting, numbness in the hands and feet and other symptoms, need to promptly seek medical treatment under the guidance of the doctor for targeted treatment.
