Glucocorticoid therapy is one of the most important treatments for autoimmune encephalitis. Patients need to use glucocorticosteroids for a long time, and each patient’s situation is different, the duration of treatment and stopping time is also different, usually need to take about 3 months.
1. Patients with severe symptoms: These patients often require hormone shock therapy and subsequent daily glucocorticoid use. Shock hormone therapy usually involves intravenous methylprednisolone for 3 weeks, during which time the dose is reduced in stages. This is followed by oral glucocorticosteroids (e.g. methylprednisolone, prednisone acetate) for about 3 months, with course and dose adjustments according to condition.
2. Patients with mild symptoms: For patients with mild symptoms, hormone shock therapy is not feasible. Patients should follow the doctor’s instructions to take oral hormone therapy (e.g. prednisolone, prednisone acetate, etc.) for about 3 months. During the treatment period, the dose is gradually reduced until it is discontinued, and it is also necessary to estimate the condition of the disease to adjust the dose and duration of hormone therapy.
For patients with autoimmune encephalitis, treatment should be carried out in regular hospitals under the guidance of specialized physicians. Hormone therapy is very professional, especially the adjustment of hormone dose and course of treatment, must be carried out by professional physicians. Patients should not reduce or stop the drug without authorization, otherwise it will aggravate the original disease, or cause adverse consequences.
