Cholera is curable with systematic treatment, but still carries a high risk of death. Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Typical cholera patients have an acute onset of severe diarrhea with vomiting, which can lead to dehydration, electrolyte disorders and muscle spasms, and in severe cases, circulatory failure and even death. Cholera-infected patients need to be strictly isolated, and because of dehydration, they need to be rehydrated in a timely manner, supplemented with antimicrobial (e.g., ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, etc.) and symptomatic treatments, and timely and correct replacement of fluids and electrolytes can dramatically reduce the morbidity and mortality rate. When the patient’s symptoms disappear, stool culture once every other day, two consecutive negative stool culture can be released from quarantine, therefore, cholera infected patients follow the doctor’s instructions, standardized treatment can be cured.
