Rib fractures generally heal on their own, and treatment is based on the principles of pain control, pulmonary physiotherapy and early mobilization, with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen) for pain. Different types of rib fractures are treated slightly differently
1. Closed single rib fracture: use multiple chest straps or elastic chest straps to immobilize the thorax, which can reduce the movement of the broken rib ends and alleviate pain.
2. Closed multiple rib fractures: effective analgesia and respiratory management are the main treatment principles.
(1) Analgesia: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be used to relieve the symptoms of pain as prescribed by the doctor. Commonly used drugs include ibuprofen, indomethacin, etc. However, it may cause bleeding of gastric mucosa, and it is necessary to consult a doctor to adjust the medication in a timely manner after the occurrence of adverse reactions.
(2) Respiratory management: Give sputum suction and pulmonary physiotherapy to those with weak cough and retained secretions in the respiratory tract.
(3) Open rib fracture: chest wall wounds need to be thoroughly debrided, and Kirschner’s needle, judet splint, stainless steel wire, etc. are used to fix the broken ends of ribs.
It is recommended that the patient go to the hospital in a timely manner, under the guidance of the physician to use drugs and related treatment.
