If the blistering is caused by herpes simplex virus infection, the herpes fluid contains a large amount of herpes simplex virus, which when picked through the vesicles will release the herpes virus in the herpes fluid and can easily infect other normal skin forming new potential foci of infection, so it is not recommended to pick through the herpes fluid blindly.
Anti-viral medication can be applied or taken orally to speed up recovery. If the blistering is caused by a bacterial infection, which is often yellow or cloudy, a sterile needle can be used to aspirate the fluid and apply antiseptic medication to the blistered lips to speed up the recovery.
