Failure to pass the newborn deafness screening may be due to the presence of amniotic fluid, fetal fat and other residues in the external ear canal, non-disease causes such as the baby crying, or congenital deafness. It is recommended to retest 42 days after birth. 1. Non-disease causes: such as amniotic fluid, fetal fat and other residues in the baby’s external auditory canal or crying. (1) The presence of amniotic fluid, fetal fat and other residues in the baby’s external auditory canal will attenuate or disappear the signals emitted by the ear, so it may cause the hearing screen to fail. (2) The baby is crying: when the baby cries, he/she cannot respond accurately to sounds and may also have a false positive. 2. Congenital deafness: Failure to pass the hearing screen because of congenital hearing abnormalities. Those diagnosed with congenital deafness should undergo medical intervention as early as possible or opt for hearing aid or cochlear implantation under the guidance of a doctor. Newborns who do not pass the hearing test are advised to have a repeat test after 42 days. Those with definite congenital deafness should be treated under medical supervision.
