Generally speaking, gastroscopy and barium meal are two different examination methods, both of which can be used for digestive examination, but each has its own scope of application and cannot be compared to determine which one is better. Gastroscopy is an examination method to visualize the mucous membrane of esophagus and stomach through gastroscope equipment; barium meal can observe the morphology of esophagus and stomach through contrast of contrast medium. Gastroscopy can clearly and intuitively see whether the mucosa of esophagus and stomach is congested, edema, erosion, bleeding, and can see tiny lesions, meanwhile, histopathological biopsy can be carried out on the suspected lesion area, and hemostasis and other treatments can be carried out under gastroscopy. By drinking barium, barium meal examination can observe whether the mucosa of cavity organs (such as stomach, esophagus, etc.) is flat, smooth, continuous, with or without lesions, and it can also observe the morphology of esophagus, stomach and duodenum, etc. Though the sensitivity is not as high as that of gastroscopy, the examination is less painful, especially for the patients of cardio-cerebral and cerebral vascular diseases who can not tolerate gastroscopy.
