The main reasons why ankle is still swollen 6 months after ankle fracture may be microcirculation disorders or postoperative displacement of the fracture, secondary infections, and so on. Treatment mainly includes conservative treatment and surgery.
1. Conservative treatment: patients can take physical therapy such as elevating the affected limbs, hot compresses and massages to alleviate the swelling; oral medication can be chosen to accelerate the blood circulation of the lower limbs such as Diosmin tablets and Mai Zhi Ling tablets, etc. Intravenous medication can be chosen to eliminate the edema, such as mannitol and heptaphyllum saponin sodium, etc. All the above medications should be taken under doctor’s supervision. All of the above drugs should be used under the guidance of the doctor, avoid self-medication.
2. Surgery: If the patient’s ankle swelling is obvious, it may need to be treated by surgery if necessary. For example, if the fracture is displaced after the operation, the patient needs a second operation to cut and reset the internal fixation; if the patient has a secondary infection or abscess, the patient needs to cut and drain to reduce the pressure; if the joints or ligaments have adhesion, the patient needs to be operated to loosen them. The specific surgical treatment needs to be decided according to the original disease.
If the patient’s ankle swelling symptoms are serious, or the symptoms do not improve, the patient should go to the hospital in time for treatment.
