What does low platelet mean on physical exam

Low platelets on physical examination usually means that the platelets in the blood are below the low end of the normal range i.e. 100 x 10^9/L.
Platelets are small pieces of cytoplasm shed from bone marrow megakaryocytes, not strictly cells, which are involved in the process of stopping bleeding in the body. The normal range of platelets in adults is (100~300)×10^9/L. When the platelet count is lower than 100×10^9/L, it is considered as low platelet count.
Clinically, low platelet count is often seen in aplastic anemia, acute leukemia, megaloblastic anemia, systemic lupus erythematosus and lymphoma.
Therefore, if low platelets are found during physical examination, it is recommended to go to the hospital as soon as possible for a clear diagnosis and standardized treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
