Inflammatory bowel diseases include ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Most of the former have recurrent episodes, and those with mild and prolonged remission have a better prognosis. The latter is mostly recurrent and prolonged.
1. Ulcerative colitis: diarrhea, mucus, pus and blood stools and abdominal pain are the main symptoms, as well as abdominal distension, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and so on. In severe cases, toxic megacolon, intestinal perforation, cancer and other complications may occur. The prognosis of mild and long-term remission is good, and the prognosis of those with complications is poor.
2. Crohn’s disease: abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss is its main clinical manifestations, as well as abdominal masses, fistula formation, perianal lesions, fever, nutritional disorders. The disease can be improved by treatment, and some of them can be relieved on their own. However, most patients have recurrent episodes that do not heal, and some of them require surgery due to complications during the course of their illness.
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease should consult a doctor for timely treatment.
