Poor sleep is called insomnia in Chinese medicine, which refers to the frequent inability to get normal sleep, with mild cases having difficulty falling asleep or waking up easily after sleep, and severe cases staying awake all night. Acupuncture points that can help improve sleep include Baihui, Anmian, Shenmen, Shenwei, Zhaohai and Sanyinjiao. Baihui is at the top of the head, five inches straight up from the center of the front hairline, and this point has the effect of soothing the brain and calming the mind. Anmian is at the nape of the neck, at the midpoint of the line connecting Fengchi and Cataract; this point is an empirically effective point for treating insomnia. Shenmen is at the wrist, at the ulnar end of the transverse stripe on the distal side of the palm of the wrist, at the radial edge of the ulnar flexor tendon of the wrist, and this point has the effect of tranquilizing the mind and calming the spirit. Shen Wei is at the ankle, directly below the tip of the ankle, in the depression between the lower edge of the ankle and the heel bone. Zhaohai is at the ankle, one inch below the tip of the inner ankle, in the depression between the lower edge of the inner ankle and the margin. Shen Vein and Zhaohai are often used in conjunction with each other to regulate the yin and yang stilt veins, and to help sleep and calm the mind. Sanyinjiao is on the inner side of the lower leg, three inches above the tip of the inner ankle, at the posterior margin of the medial edge of the tibia, this point can regulate the liver, spleen and kidneys in order to help sleep. If the patient often sleeps badly, he should consult a doctor in the hospital in time. If he chooses acupuncture to regulate, he needs to be operated by a professional Chinese medicine doctor, and he should not treat himself with acupuncture.
