Epilepsy is a chronic brain dysfunction syndrome caused by multiple etiologies. The important principles of antiepileptic drug therapy: 1. Early treatment after diagnosis: Generally, medication should be started after 2 seizures. 2. Rational selection of antiepileptic drugs: Drugs should be selected according to the type of seizure or epilepsy syndrome. 3, try to monotherapy: when monotherapy is really ineffective, consider arranging reasonable combination therapy. 4. Take medication regularly and have sufficient treatment course: Change or stop medication reasonably, avoid self-adjustment, stopping medication and abusing medication. 5.Avoid staying up late and drinking alcohol. 6. Scientific education: According to a survey, 12% of epilepsy patients in rural areas in China seek medical treatment from wandering doctors or witch doctors. Some parents of children with intractable epilepsy lose confidence in their children, give up treatment, education and guidance, so that the children completely lose the opportunity to relieve symptoms, reduce damage and obtain a better prognosis. It is important to help parents of children with epilepsy recognize the chronic nature of the disease, not to lose confidence because seizures are not controlled in the short term, not to follow medical advice, and to change doctors and medications frequently. The parents’ eagerness to get their children cured can easily lead them to listen to the advertisements of secret formulas and prescriptions for “curing epilepsy” and to travel from place to place, which eventually leads to huge financial losses and even mental breakdown. Community doctors should guide residents to abandon discriminatory attitudes and behaviors toward epilepsy as a chronic condition, provide a good social environment for children with epilepsy, and encourage children with epilepsy to actively participate in appropriate sports and recreational activities to enhance their social participation and shorten the distance between them and normal children. For children whose seizures are under control, swimming and bicycling are not strictly prohibited to prevent them from hurting their self-esteem. For those whose seizures are not fully controlled, they can be allowed to do activities in pairs.
