Does Ménière’s disease heal on its own as we age?

Meniere’s disease does not usually resolve itself with age. The cause of Meniere’s disease, a disease of fluid in the labyrinth of the inner eardrum, is unknown, but infections, syphilis, otosclerosis, and damage to the ear can lead to an increased risk of developing the disease. The disease causes recurrent episodes of rotational vertigo, tinnitus, and progressive hearing loss. Although Meniere’s disease has a tendency to resolve itself, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that it is related to aging, and the disease itself is progressive in nature, with prolonged illness leading to worsening of the symptoms. Due to the recurrent nature of Ménière’s disease, it is recommended that the disease be effectively managed in the intervals between illnesses through a low-salt diet, appropriate medication, lifestyle improvements and surgical treatments. Individuals are advised to seek prompt medical attention if they develop symptoms suspected to be related to Meniere’s disease.
