How long after IUD removal can you have intercourse

After removal of the IUD, it is advisable to wait at least 2 weeks before having intercourse. The main mechanism of action of the IUD is to change the environment of the uterine cavity and the nature of the cervical mucus. If the uterine cavity has adapted to the presence of the IUD, a change in the environment of the uterine cavity again after removal can cause irregular bleeding, which usually ends within two weeks, and sexual intercourse should not occur during bleeding. The IUD removal is an invasive operation that requires dilatation of the cervix and access to the uterine cavity, and the cervical opening is still open for two weeks after the operation, so sex is likely to cause reproductive tract infection. Therefore, sexual intercourse should be prohibited for at least two weeks after IUD removal, and oral antibiotics can be taken to prevent infection. If other uncomfortable symptoms occur, the period of sexual intercourse should be extended. Removal of the IUD should be performed within 3-7 days after menstruation, when the level of sex hormones gradually rises and the defense ability of the reproductive system increases, which is the most suitable time for intrauterine operation.
