Do newborns need to be woken up at night to feed?

Newborns are recommended to be fed on demand, but if they sleep more than 4 hours at night, they usually need to be woken up to feed.

Newborns require large amounts of calories to maintain their basal metabolism and growth and development due to their high metabolic demand. Coupled with less glycogen storage than adults, they are prone to hypoglycemia and malnutrition when hungry. Therefore, it is not advisable to go too long without feeding.

Generally speaking, newborns need to be woken up for feeding if they sleep for more than four hours in a row, and this can be extended if some of the children are gaining weight very fast and have a large amount of milk during the day.

Newborns are probably fed about three hours during the day and about four hours at night, 7-8 times a day is more reasonable. However, it should be adjusted according to the child’s specific situation, with the aim of meeting the child’s needs, that is, feeding on demand.
