Octreotide inhibits growth hormone and thyrotropin, inhibits secretion of gastric acid, pancreatic enzymes, glucagon and insulin, decreases gastric motility and gallbladder emptying, inhibits secretion of cholecystokinin and pancreatin, reduces pancreatic secretion, and has a direct protective effect on pancreatic parenchymal cell membrane. It reduces visceral blood flow, decreases portal pressure, decreases excessive intestinal secretion, and increases intestinal absorption of water and sodium. It is used in the emergency treatment of esophago-gastric variceal bleeding caused by acromegaly and cirrhosis, and in combination with special treatment (such as endoscopic sclerotherapy), it also prevents postoperative pancreatic comorbidities and relieves signs and symptoms associated with gastrointestinal endocrine tumors.
