The Chinese yam refers to the yam produced in Jiaozuo, Henan Province, which is the first of the “Four Great Chinese Medicines”. Boiled yam has the effect of tonifying the kidney and astringent essence, generating fluids and benefiting the lungs, tonifying the spleen and nourishing the stomach. The dried root of Dioscorea spp. is used as medicine, which is a medicinal herb with the same origin as food. Yam is sweet and flat in nature and belongs to the lung, spleen and kidney meridians.
