Can nail fungus be treated with surgery?

Fingernail infections can be treated with surgery, but not all nail infections require surgical management. Those with mild symptoms can be relieved by general treatment and medication. In severe cases, surgical procedures such as abscess drainage and nail extraction are needed. 1. Mild symptoms: For patients with mild onychomycosis, surgery may not be needed for the time being, and can be treated with drugs such as compound polymyxin B ointment and mupirocin ointment. If necessary, take sensitive antibiotics orally for anti-inflammatory treatment. 2. Severe cases: If the above treatments fail, or if obvious abscesses appear, they can be treated by abscess drainage as well as nail extraction surgery. The treatment requires a longitudinal incision along the paronychium to drain the purulent secretion inside. If there is an abscess in the nail root area, nail extraction surgery is also required. After the surgery, care should be taken to stop bleeding and control the infection. Patients with onychomycosis are advised to seek prompt medical attention and follow the doctor’s instructions for medication or other treatments.
