How long can you live with decompensated cirrhosis and liver failure?

Survival of patients with decompensated cirrhosis is related to the individual’s physical condition, the severity of liver failure and the treatment, and the 5-year survival rate is mostly less than 50%. If the physical condition is still good, the liver failure is less severe and receive systematic and standardized treatment, the survival time of patients with decompensated cirrhosis can be effectively improved, which can be more than 5 years or even reach 10 years. If the patient is in poor health, the degree of liver failure is severe and has not received standardized treatment, the patient may develop serious complications, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, infection, hepatic encephalopathy, etc., and the survival situation is not optimistic, usually less than 5 years. Alternatively, if the patient is eligible for liver transplantation and the recovery goes well, the survival period is much longer. It should be noted that the diet of patients with decompensated cirrhosis should be light, eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, and avoid excessive protein intake, which will aggravate the condition.
