What is a thyroid cyst?

A thyroid cyst is a cyst-like lesion that occurs in the thyroid gland. Thyroid cysts are benign lesions of the thyroid gland and are not serious. If the size of the thyroid cyst is small, it usually does not show obvious clinical symptoms and is usually detected during thyroid ultrasonography. If the thyroid cyst continues to grow and become larger, and when touched by hand, a localized mass may form or produce a feeling of pressure, and symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, or dyspnea may occur, at which time treatment is required. For smaller thyroid cysts, no treatment is needed and observation is sufficient. For larger thyroid cysts, such as those exceeding 4cm and accompanied by obvious symptoms, it is recommended to combine with a specialist’s diagnosis and treatment advice, and undergo timely surgical resection.
