Patchouli and mint are both traditional Chinese medicines, but their plant species, medicinal properties, efficacy, effects and contraindications are different. 1. Patchouli is patchouli, is the dry above ground part of the plant patchouli, family Labiatae, the medicinal properties of pungent, slightly warm. It belongs to the spleen, stomach and lung meridian. Mentha piperita is the dried above-ground part of Mentha piperita, family Labiatae, and is pungent and cool in nature. It belongs to the lung and liver meridians. Patchouli has the efficacy of stopping vomiting and neutralizing dampness and relieving summer heat, and can be used for vomiting; dampness and turbidity obstruction, epigastric (abdominal) congestion; dampness and warmth (feeling dampness and heat caused by the warmth of the disease) at the beginning of the summer dampness, the surface of the evidence, chest tightness, fever and tiredness; cold and dampness closure of the summer heat, abdominal pain and vomiting and diarrhea. Its adverse reactions and contraindications are not yet clear. 2. Mentha piperita has the efficacy of clearing the head and eyes, dredging the liver to move qi, evacuating wind-heat, transmitting rashes, and inducing diaphoresis, and can be used for wind-heat colds and flu, the first signs of warm diseases; distension and tightness in the chest and ribs, stagnation of the liver and qi (liver’s qi and blood transportation is not smooth, depression); headache and dizziness, wind-heat attacking the upper part, paralysis of the larynx (pharyngeal redness, swelling, pain, or dryness, a sense of foreign bodies, or pharyngeal itching and discomfort, difficulty in swallowing) and other symptoms. It can also be used for mouth and tongue sores, eye redness and tearfulness, sore throat; impenetrable measles, rubella itching and so on.
