Gout is categorized as a paralytic disease in Chinese medicine, and commonly used moxibustion points include Ah Yes point (the point where acidity, numbness, distension and pain are obvious), Diaphragm Yu, Sea of Blood, Kidney Yu, and Lumbar Yang Guan. In Chinese medicine, it is believed that the treatment of paralysis should be based on the activation of the meridians and collaterals, the movement of qi and pain relief (through the regulation of the body’s qi to alleviate pain), the preferred acupuncture point is the painful parts of the A Shi point, which can play a role in relieving pain. In addition to the A Shi point, other points can be selected according to the type of evidence. For example, if wind is prevalent, it can be combined with Diaphragm Yu and Blood Sea to invigorate blood circulation and dispel wind; if cold is prevalent, it can be combined with Kidney Yu and Lumbar Yang Guan, which can invigorate yang qi. If heat paralysis (often manifested as burning, pain, redness and swelling of joint muscles), i.e., burning pain in the joints of the limbs, etc., is the mainstay, then moxibustion is not recommended as a treatment method, and can be treated by a professional acupuncturist who can select acupuncture points for the treatment. Specific moxibustion operation needs to be carried out under the guidance of a doctor.
