A mean platelet volume of 16.3 is an abnormality.
The normal range of mean platelet volume is 9~13fl, 16.3 suggests that platelet volume increases, mostly seen in immune thrombocytopenia, chronic granulocytic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and so on.
1. Immune thrombocytopenia: autoimmunity leads to destruction of platelets, early release of naive platelets from bone marrow, and the presence of immature platelets of larger size in the blood, leading to an increase in the average platelet volume.
2. Chronic granulocytic leukemia: when chronic granulocytic leukemia is accompanied by a significant increase in the number of megakaryocytes, there will be an increase in the number of naïve megakaryocytes as well, resulting in an increase in the average platelet volume.
3. Myelodysplastic syndromes: when myelodysplastic syndromes cause anemia, platelets increase compensatorily and the mean platelet volume is high.
If there is an increase in the average platelet volume, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time for early and regular treatment.
