The following types of infarcts and symptoms are common: 1. Infarcts in the basal ganglia region, manifesting as hemiparesis of the contralateral limb, including central facial and tongue palsy, contralateral hemianesthesia, and hemianopsia if the internal capsule is involved. 2. Frontal lobe infarcts, with ataxia, mental disorders, and emotional abnormalities, and accompanied by motor aphasia. 3. Temporal lobe infarcts, with mental disorders, decreased learning ability, memory loss, and sensory aphasia. 4. In cerebellar infarction, dizziness, unsteady walking, ataxia, chanting-like speech, and decreased ipsilateral muscle tone of the limbs are seen.5 In brainstem infarction, typical brainstem infarction has pinpoint pupils, hyperthermia, coma, and tetraplegia. Milder patients may also have symptoms of paraplegia, sensory impairment, and medullary paralysis of the lateral limbs.
