Can acupuncture treat lumbar spondylolisthesis and lumbar disc herniation?

Patient Feng Moumou, female, 58 years old. She has been suffering from lumbar pain radiating to the right lower extremity with intermittent claudication for 2 years. 2 years ago, she started to have lumbar pain radiating to the right lower extremity with numbness and intermittent claudication in the lateral calf, which gradually worsened. Now the symptoms appear after standing for about 5 minutes, and the symptoms are aggravated by walking about 50 meters. Physical examination showed lumbar scoliosis, lumbar muscle tension, pressure pain, decreased skin sensation in the right lateral calf, and a negative straight leg raise test. Lumbar spine X-ray showed scoliosis of the lumbar spine, the 4th lumbar spine slipped forward at Ⅰ°, and there were different degrees of osteophytes at the edges of each vertebra. MRI of the lumbar spine showed forward slippage of the 4th lumbar vertebra Ⅰ°, and the L5S1 intervertebral disc protruded to the right posterior lateral side. After three times of acupuncture treatment, the lumbar pain and numbness of the right lower limb now disappeared, and he was able to walk continuously for 1 hour without discomfort. The patient was instructed to perform functional exercises such as sit-ups and knee rolls. It is strictly forbidden to do functional exercises for the lumbar back muscles to avoid aggravating the lumbar spine slippage.
