The attitude towards emergency contraceptive pills in China is divided into “two schools of thought”, one school of thought regards emergency contraceptive pills as “demons” and “flooding beasts” and believes that the side effects of emergency contraceptive pills are so great that they must be abolished. The other faction (young “kids”) sees the emergency contraceptive pill as a “life-saver”. The other school of thought (young “kids”) sees the emergency contraceptive pill as a “life-saver”, and relies on the emergency contraceptive pill when an “accident” occurs, not realizing that the pill is far less effective than conventional contraceptive methods. I personally believe that both attitudes are wrong. In many countries and regions of the world (including China), the supply of contraceptives is far from meeting the needs of people of childbearing age (and teenagers). At the same time many women abroad have difficulty in obtaining safe abortions (nothing like abortion is so convenient at home). To resolve this paradox, many women have to resort to emergency contraception as a remedy to reduce the damage caused to them by an unwanted pregnancy – abortion. Professor Trusell of Princeton University, an internationally renowned family planning expert, says that emergency contraception is the last line of defense to protect women from unintended pregnancy and a bridge between the uncontraceptive or incorrect use of contraceptive methods and scientific contraception for people of reproductive age (both women and men). I strongly agree with him that there are always mistakes in life, as well as when it comes to contraception, there are times when it is a fluke and fails, and emergency contraception can help women to have a “last chance”.
