The constant secretion of saliva from the mouth for no reason can be caused by physiologic and pathologic reasons, which need to be treated according to the specific causes, including general treatment, medication, surgical treatment, and so on.
1. Physiological reasons
(1) Wearing dentures or orthodontic appliances: If you wear dentures or orthodontic appliances, you will have an obvious sense of foreign body in your mouth, which will lead to an increase in saliva secretion. It can be adapted for a period of time, and if it cannot be relieved for a long time, you can consider changing to a more suitable denture or orthodontic appliance.
(2) Oral uncleanliness: If you don’t clean your mouth properly for a long time, food residues and bacteria in your mouth will also lead to excessive saliva secretion. It is necessary to develop a good habit of brushing teeth and rinsing mouth frequently.
2. Pathological causes
(1) Oral diseases: If the increased salivary secretion is caused by oral ulcers, it can be treated with topical lidocaine gel, benzydamine spray, chlorhexidine gargle, etc. If it is caused by dental caries, it can be treated by surgical methods such as silver amalgam filling surgery and inlay repair surgery.
(2) Neurological diseases: Typical diseases include epilepsy, Parkinson’s, cerebral infarction and so on. For epilepsy patients, first of all, we should pay attention to preventing injuries, and can selectively take carbamazepine, phenytoin sodium, etc. according to the specific type of symptoms; Parkinson’s patients can take compound levodopa, amantadine, etc., and pay attention to nutritional support.
If there is an unexplained excessive secretion of saliva, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time to find out the cause of the disease before receiving treatment, and use medication under the guidance of the physician.
