In patients with hepatitis B, antiviral therapy may be needed even if liver function is normal. Liver function is not the only indicator of the need for antiviral therapy, but needs to be evaluated in conjunction with the quantification of hepatitis B virus DNA, liver function, and a variety of factors such as the patient’s age, family history, severity of liver disease, and concomitant illnesses. For example, patients with normal liver function but cirrhosis, or patients with normal liver function but positive hepatitis B virus DNA combined with the presence of severe destruction of liver tissue, liver fibrosis, family history of liver cancer, and age older than 30 years old need to be treated with antiviral therapy. It is recommended that the patient should consult a medical doctor in time to evaluate whether antiviral treatment is needed.
