Can you eat eggs with moldy shells on the outside?

If the outside shell of an egg is moldy, it is generally not recommended to consume the egg.

Since the shell and the inside of the egg are not completely isolated and closed, the mold of the shell may enter the inside through the tissue holes, resulting in contamination of the inside of the egg, so consumption may cause bacterial food poisoning, triggering disorders of the digestive tract flora, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and other symptoms.

In addition, moldy food contains aflatoxin, and long-term intake of aflatoxin-contaminated food may lead to chronic hepatotoxicity, and in severe cases, liver cancer.

Therefore, it is recommended to avoid eating eggs with moldy shells and use fresh eggs, which can be stored properly in the freezer.
