Xuan Shen, bitter, salty and slightly cold in nature; it belongs to the lung, stomach and kidney meridians.
Xuan Shen has the efficacy of clearing heat and cooling blood (relieving blood heat by clearing heat), diarrhea and detoxification (removing fire and poisonous evil from the body), and nourishing Yin. It is used for treating warm evils entering the camp, internal trapping in the pericardium, warm poisonous spots (warm-heat poisonous evils invading the body resulting in spots and plaques on the skin), heat illnesses that injure the yin, constipation due to injury of the fluids, redness of the eyes and sore throat, scrofula (mainly refers to tuberculosis of the lymph nodes in the neck), diphtheria, carbuncles, swellings, sores and poisons.
Xuan Shen should not be taken by people with dampness in the spleen and stomach, or with loose stools in spleen deficiency. Xuan Shen should not be used in conjunction with Veratrum.
