Varicose vein surgery typically requires a few days in the hospital

Varicose vein surgery usually requires about a week of hospitalization. Varicose vein surgery is a minor procedure in general surgery and there are various types of surgery including the traditional high saphenous vein ligation stripping and the more popular minimally invasive procedures such as laser endoluminal closure, radiofrequency ablation and sclerotherapy. Adequate examination is required 1 to 2 days prior to the procedure to assess the risk of the procedure, and hospitalization is required after the procedure to change the medication and observe for the occurrence of related complications and infection of the incision. Traditional surgeries have a relatively higher risk of postoperative incision infection because of the greater trauma, so a relatively longer hospitalization is generally recommended, about one week. Minimally invasive surgery can be discharged from the hospital about 5 days after the operation if the patient has no special discomfort and there is no obvious sign of infection in the incision.
