What’s with the twitching and fluttering of the eyelids?

Twitching and fluttering of the eyelids may be a physiological phenomenon, or it may be caused by eye diseases, facial muscle spasm and other pathological reasons.
1. Physiological reasons: excessive eye use, high mental tension, poor sleep quality, improper sleeping posture, etc. will make the patient’s eye muscles involuntary contraction, manifested as eyelid twitching and fluttering.
2. Pathological causes
(1) Eye diseases: some eye diseases such as impingement, conjunctivitis, trachoma, scleritis, etc., under the stimulation of inflammation or eyelashes, patients may experience eyelid twitching and jumping, photophobia, tearing and other uncomfortable symptoms.
(2) Facial muscle spasm: intracranial diseases such as cerebral hemorrhage, intracranial tumors or intracranial cysts may compress the facial nerve root, and patients may develop facial muscle spasm, which may be manifested as intermittent twitching of orbicularis oculi muscle, i.e. eyelid jumping in the early stage.
It is recommended that patients with unrelieved frequent eyelid fluttering should seek prompt medical attention to assess their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
