What’s wrong with coughing at night?

Coughing at night may be related to cough variant asthma, reflux esophagitis, cardiac insufficiency and so on. 1. Cough variant asthma: it is a special type of asthma in which coughing is the only or main clinical manifestation, and coughing is predominant at night without obvious symptoms or signs such as wheezing and shortness of breath. 2. Reflux esophagitis: when lying down at night, due to the functional damage of the lower esophageal sphincter, causing food reflux of gastric contents, the reflux material irritates the pharynx, causing irritating cough. These patients have obvious symptoms such as acid reflux and belching. 3. Cardiac insufficiency: some patients will have an increase in the volume of returned blood at night when they lie down to fall asleep, which leads to pulmonary stasis due to a decrease in the function of the heart pump. This may be manifested by coughing and wheezing, and sometimes telangiectasia. Coughing symptoms at night can also be caused by other conditions, such as postnasal drip syndrome. If the symptoms are not relieved or worsened, it is recommended to go to a regular hospital, follow the doctor’s instructions for further examination, clarify the cause with the doctor’s help, and carry out targeted treatment or therapy.
