Will you lose weight if you take ursodeoxycholic acid tablets?

Normally, there is no weight loss with ursodeoxycholic acid tablets. Ursodeoxycholic acid is a choleretic drug, as the main bile acid can replace or displace toxic hydrophobic endogenous bile acids. It is used for the non-surgical treatment of cholesterol stones in the Pudong gallbladder where X-rays are able to penetrate the gallbladder in people with normal gallbladder contraction; cholestatic liver disease (e.g., primary biliary cirrhosis); bile reflux gastritis; and steatorrhea (after ileal resection). Ursodeoxycholic acid can also be used to prevent the formation of drug-induced stones and is also effective in toxic liver disorders, cholecystitis, cholangitis and biliary dyspepsia. Ursodeoxycholic acid is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to the product, suffer from gallbladder or bile duct disease, or have severe hepatic failure; it should be used with caution in children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly. Adverse reactions to ursodeoxycholic acid include diarrhea, elevated creatinine, elevated blood glucose, leukopenia, peptic ulcer, rash, thrombocytopenia, abdominal pain, and nausea, but no weight loss. If weight loss occurs after administration, it may be caused by under-eating due to gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and loss of appetite caused by ursodeoxycholic acid, or it may indicate the presence of other medical conditions in the patient. Ursodeoxycholic acid should be taken under medical supervision.
