The treatment of demyelinating myelitis is mainly based on drug therapy.
In the acute stage, larger doses of glucocorticoids are usually applied, which can inhibit the abnormal inflammatory reaction, reduce the damage of the spinal cord, and help control the disease. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the adverse effects, such as fat metabolism disorders in the body, osteoporosis and so on. If the effect of hormone resistance is not good, the application of plasma replacement or high-dose immunoglobulin therapy can be considered.
The remission period usually requires long-term application of low-dose glucocorticosteroids for maintenance, and with the use of other immunosuppressive agents. For example, patients with multiple sclerosis can apply interferon during the remission period, and the drugs should be used under the guidance of the doctor.
There is currently no effective treatment for demyelinating myelitis. Demyelinating myelitis can easily lead to limb paralysis, which affects the patient’s quality of life. Therefore, once diagnosed, treatment should be started as soon as possible to improve the patient’s outcome.
