Shengdi has the effects of clearing heat and cooling blood (relieving blood heat by clearing heat), nourishing yin and generating fluids, while maitake has the effects of nourishing yin and moistening lungs (nourishing the lungs by replenishing the fluids in the lungs), benefiting the stomach and generating fluids (nourishing the stomach by replenishing the fluids in the stomach), and clearing the heart and removing the vexation (removing vexation and fever from the heart). 1. Radix et Rhizoma Shengdi (生地): sweet in taste and cold in nature, it belongs to the heart, liver and kidney meridians, and is used in treating feverish diseases such as tongue-redness and thirst, yin deficiency and internal heat, bone vapor and labor heat, internal heat and thirst (internal heat accompanied by symptoms such as eating, drinking and urinating), vomiting blood, epistaxis, and macular eruption and rash. Shengdi is not suitable for patients with spleen deficiency and dampness stagnation as well as abdominal fullness and loose stools (thin and unformed feces). 2. Maitong: sweet, slightly bitter, slightly cold in nature, belonging to the heart, lung and stomach meridians, used in the treatment of dry lung and cough, cough with deficiency of yin and consumption, paralysis of the throat (redness, swelling and pain in the pharynx, dryness and foreign body sensation, itching and discomfort in the pharynx, dysphagia), sore throat, thirst with injury of fluids, thirst with internal heat, heartburn and insomnia, constipation with dryness of intestines and constipation. Maitong is contraindicated in patients suffering from deficiency and coldness of the spleen and stomach (weak and cold spleen and stomach), loose stools with little food, and external wind-cold. The use of Maitong with Radix et Rhizoma Shengdi needs to be taken under the guidance of a doctor, and should not be used indiscriminately.
