How is postherpetic neuralgia treated?

Postherpetic neuralgia is a kind of intractable pain, and the treatment aims mainly at relieving pain, improving sleep, and improving the quality of life of patients. 1.Oral medication: At present, oral administration is still the preferred method of treatment for postherpetic neuralgia. Drug treatment mainly includes: antiepileptic drugs such as gabapentin, pregabalin, opioid analgesics such as tramadol extended-release tablets, antidepressants such as doxepin, etc. 2.Nerve block: nerve block is one of the common and effective treatment methods for postherpetic neuralgia. Intradermal block, stellate ganglion block, epidural block, paravertebral nerve block and nerve trunk block can all be applied according to the innervation of the pain site. Continuous “patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)” mode of drug delivery can also be chosen. 3.Neural destruction therapy: For patients with refractory postherpetic neuralgia, nerve destruction can be used when the effect of various treatments is not good or cannot be maintained to achieve a longer-term effect. Ethanol, phenol glycerol and radiofrequency therapy are the commonly used nerve destruction methods. 4, central nerve electrical stimulation: spinal cord or intracerebral electrical stimulation therapy is an effective method for the treatment of refractory postherpetic neuralgia, but it is expensive and difficult to promote.
