Suction operation is to suck out the sputum retained in the respiratory tract through the principle of negative pressure suction, which can promote the smoothness of the respiratory tract, improve ventilation and infections, and needs to be carried out by professional medical personnel, and it is not recommended that the patient operate on his/her own.
1. Bring the supplies to the patient’s bedside, check the patient’s information, assist the patient to take a comfortable position, turn on the power supply, turn on the switch of the suction device, connect the suction hose with the suction tube, suck up the saline, and check whether the pipeline is smooth.
2. The patient adopts the lying position or the supine position, turns to the operator, and slightly tilts back to open the mouth, the unconscious patient can use the cotter to help open the mouth, one hand folds the end of the catheter, gently inserts the tube into the patient’s oral cavity or nasal cavity, and suctions out the secretions of the oral cavity and the nose.
3. Replace the suction tube, fold the end of the catheter, insert it into the trachea at an appropriate depth and then open the end of the catheter, gently, flexibly and rapidly rotate it from side to side, and suction on the suction tube.
4. Take out the sputum tube and inhale saline for rinsing, each time the sputum suction time is not more than 15s, clean the patient’s mouth, turn off the power supply, and observe whether the patient has any oral mucous membrane damage and other reactions.
The sputum operation should be carried out strictly aseptically, the sputum catheter should be changed every time, and the oral care should be done well.
