What causes insomnia and night sweats?

In Chinese medicine, it is believed that heart-kidney disharmony (heart fire and kidney yin deficiency, dysfunction of the physiological functions of the heart and the kidneys) can lead to insomnia, excessive dreaming, and night sweating (abnormal sweating after falling asleep, but sweating stops after waking up).
It may be accompanied by heartburn, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), dizziness, tinnitus, lumbar and knee weakness (a feeling of soreness and weakness in the lumbar and knee regions), five heartburns and heat (heat in the hearts of the hands and feet, and self-consciousness of being irritated by heat in the heart and chest), dryness of the mouth and throat, a red tongue with little moss, and a thin and countless pulse (a pulse that becomes narrower, finer, and quicker in rate), and the symptoms of spermatorrhea for men, and irregular menstruation for women.
The pathogenesis of this disease is that the deficiency of kidney yin cannot be served to the heart, and the excessive fire of the heart cannot be handed over to the kidney, so the water and fire are not in harmony, and the heart and spirit are not at peace, which in turn leads to the symptoms mentioned above.
For treatment, Six-flavored Dihuang Pill combined with Jiaotai Pill is recommended. Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Chinese yam nourishes the liver and kidney, and fills in the marrow (replenishes the essence and promotes the development of bone marrow); Zedoariae, Poria, and Dampi strengthens the spleen and seeps away dampness and clears the phasic fire; Rhizoma Coptidis clears the heart and lowers the fire; and Cinnamon induces the fire to return to the original.
The combination of the eight drugs can play a role in nourishing yin and lowering fire (nourishing yin essence, lowering fire), and transporting the heart and kidneys (heart fire decreases, kidney water rises, and each other restrains the other).
It is recommended that patients should consult the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of a regular hospital when symptoms occur, and be treated by a doctor for evidence-based treatment.
