Glaucoma is a serious and blinding eye disease. The incidence of glaucoma accounts for about 1% of the population and one in fifty people over the age of 40, and its blindness rate accounts for 10% of the blind, so it is considered by many to be a very dangerous eye disease. However, the majority of glaucoma, as long as it is diagnosed early and treated actively and carefully, can be completely controlled without causing blindness. In our long-term clinical practice in ophthalmology, we have come into contact with numerous glaucoma patients. Some of them are pessimistic and desperate when they hear that they have glaucoma; some of them do not care because they do not have obvious conscious symptoms and let nature take its course; some of them are eager to achieve success and seek medical treatment everywhere, but they have never carried out systematic treatment seriously; others believe in witchcraft and gods, but what they bought with their money is a disaster. Of course, there are quite a number of patients who have cooperated seriously with doctors for a long time and have achieved good results in treatment. It is especially important to point out that a considerable number of patients with chronic glaucoma often gradually lose some or even all of their vision without realizing it, instead of seeking medical attention early, thus missing the time for treatment and regretting it for life. In our long-term clinical practice, the authors have often been consulted by glaucoma patients and their families about glaucoma prevention and treatment verbally, by phone, by letter, by SMS, by blog, by QQ, etc. So we selected questions of general interest and answered them one by one with concise drawings, which included basic knowledge of glaucoma, such as the simple structure and functional principles of the eye, the causes of glaucoma, the development process and expected consequences, problems that may be encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, and the attitude and specific measures that glaucoma patients should take in the treatment process, with the aim of minimizing the harm of glaucoma to patients. What are the dangers of glaucoma? I believe this is something that all glaucoma patients are eager to understand, after all, no one is not worried about their own bodies. So what are the dangers of glaucoma disease to the human body? 1, glaucoma is one of the most common blinding diseases, characterized by elevated intraocular pressure, optic nerve atrophy and visual field defects. In most cases, the cause of optic nerve damage is mainly high intraocular pressure, but also occurs in a few people with normal intraocular pressure, called normal intraocular pressure glaucoma. Although the clinical features of glaucoma are diverse, the most important hazard is visual impairment, which manifests itself as decreased visual acuity and visual field defects. 2, vision loss usually occurs in acute high IOP. The initial stage of vision loss is due to high IOP that prevents the corneal endothelium from draining water from the cornea normally, resulting in corneal epithelial edema. Acute persistent high IOP can reduce vision to light perception only, which is because very high IOP seriously affects the metabolism of the optic cells. 3, chronic high IOP and persistent high IOP later cause optic nerve atrophy, resulting in visual field defects. Glaucomatous optic nerve atrophy is multifactorial, but the most important causes are mechanical compression and optic disc ischemia. Very high intraocular pressure causes the scleral sieve plate to bulge backward, squeezing and pulling the optic nerve fibers passing through the sieve plate and blocking axial pulp flow to the optic nerve fibers. High intraocular pressure may also cause ischemia of the optic disc, which adds to the damage of the optic nerve fibers and eventually leads to optic nerve atrophy. 4, because the visual field defect is insidious and progressive, especially primary open-angle glaucoma, because the early clinical manifestations are not obvious or no specificity is not easy to detect, once found vision loss and consultation, often is already late in the course of the disease, visual field defect is serious, and can not be restored. Therefore, glaucoma emphasizes early detection and timely treatment.
